As of October 1, 2025, a new law in Florida went into effect, focusing on license plate visibility and compliance, specifically regarding license plate frames.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) recently issued guidance clarifying what is and is not permitted for license plate frames.
For dealerships across the state, this means taking a closer look at the license plate frames being installed on vehicles, since non-compliant frames can create issues not only for drivers but also for dealers.
Here’s what you need to know — and how Dealer One Stop (DOS) can help.
What the Law Says About Florida License Plate Frames
Florida law prohibits any device that obscures, covers, or interferes with the visibility or detectability of a license plate’s primary features. According to FLHSMV guidance, license plate frames are still allowed, as long as they do not obstruct:
- The alpha-numeric license plate identifier (i.e., the license plate number) or
- The registration sticker for the license plate.
State officials also clarified that a frame can cover the top portion of the plate as long as law enforcement can see where the plate was issued. The information along the bottom of the plate can be covered entirely.
In short, frames are allowed but only if they’re designed correctly.
Why This Matters for Dealerships
For dealerships, license plate frames are more than a finishing touch. They’re a branding opportunity. But with increased enforcement, using non-compliant frames can lead to:
- Customer frustration
- Potential liability concerns
- Costly reorders or replacements
- Damage to your dealership’s reputation
That’s why now is the time to audit your current license plate frame inventory and ensure everything being installed meets Florida’s updated requirements.
